Is Hypnotherapy Like What We See On TV?

No.

Contrary to how hypnosis is sometimes portrayed in movies or on television, you don't lose control over your behavior while under hypnosis. In fact, you typically remain completely aware of and remember what happens during hypnosis.

Hypnosis therapy is a state of heightened focus and concentration. It combines hypnosis with psychological and therapeutic techniques to help clients achieve personal transformation and address a wide range of issues, from anxiety and phobias to insomnia and chronic pain - and has proven to be an effective means of treating various emotional and behavioral challenges.

How Does Hypnotherapy Work?

Hypnosis is usually considered an aid to therapy because the hypnotic state allows the hypnotherapist to help process and release the trauma, anxiety or depression. Hypnotherapists help clients address and overcome issues that may be deeply rooted in their subconscious.

In some instances, the client will want to explore painful thoughts, feelings, and memories as a way to work through them. In those cases, Dr. Brown asks open ended questions (the same as in a typical therapy session) to the client while they are under hypnosis to help navigate their healing process.

Hypnosis Can Be Used In Two Ways: Suggestion Therapy or Problem Analysis

Suggestion: The hypnotic state makes a person more open to suggestions which usually results in changes in behaviors, thoughts and emotions.

Analysis: This approach uses the relaxed state to explore a possible psychological root cause of a disorder or symptom, such as a traumatic past event that a person has hidden in their unconscious memory. Once the trauma is revealed, it can be addressed in psychotherapy.
